According to a study published in the journal Cardiovascular Research, a diet containing lots of salt can contribute to increased levels of stress. In the study, the researchers found that a high-salt diet increased the levels of stress hormones by 75%.

The findings of the study suggested that the daily salt intake for adults should be less than 6 grams; however, most adults consume about 9 grams or more. This can lead to higher blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and vascular dementia.

Additionally, the researchers observed that a high-salt diet not only increased the levels of the stress hormone but also doubled the response to environmental stress factors.
